Results / Inland Championships Grafham Water SC - 05/10/2002
There is something special about the combination of the first weekend of
October, Grafham Water SC, the RS fleets, and Grand Slam circuit sponsors
GUL. For the fourth year in a row the first weekend in October produced
real wind, GWSC Race teams made full use of the conditions to set
excellent courses and the RS fleets increased in numbers yet again with
245 boats racing in the five classes. The whole of the lake was used on
Saturday with three courses end to end, the scene from the clubhouse was
pretty amazing as the fleets raced in a good force 5.
An amazing turnout of 77 RS200s (this gives the 200s two top 10
positions in Yachts and Yachting Nationals chart), arrived at Grafham for
the final event in the GUL Grand Slam series, all believing the many
weather forecasts. The expectation was for 12-14 knot moderate breezes on
Saturday and a real danger of a big high giving light airs on Sunday. As
the fleet rigged it slowly dawned on people that the breeze had been
steadily building so race 1 started in a good force 4-5, race 2-3 was
held in the top end of a 4-5 and by the second half of race 4 the big
gusts of force 6 never seemed to drop. A big fleet of RS200s produces
some spectacular sights downwind in such conditions and photographers
Nick Champion and Nick Kirk were not disappointed.
Race 1 was a benefit for David Giles /Fiona Clark who led the majority of
the race from Tom/Jo Hewitson and Jon Lewis/Paula Hall. Race 2 seemed to
be heading for a similar result with Giles/Clark holding a good lead on
the final run. A capsize gybing though allowed a tight group of
Lewis/Hall, Hewitsons and Mike Saul/Sophie Hartley to burn through and
finish in that order with a soggy Giles 4th.Race 3 saw John Pink/John
Gimson, taking time out from their 470 campaign, lead the first half of
the race just ahead of the Hewitsons, Pete Vincent/Trudie Danbury and
Steve Dunn/Dottie Cormack. Vincent/Danbury out larded them up the third
beat and telly tubbied the fleet on the last two runs to win from
Pink/Gimson with Mike Saul pulling through to third on the final run.
Giles/Clark were at it again in Race 4 leading from an early stage. They
looked to have survived the challenge of Ian Pickard/Laurie Dunn and were
heading for a race win on the final lap. Paul Hammett/Sarah Allen and
Pink/ Gimson gybed early on the final run and came into the finish in a
cloud of spray in a force 6 to claim first and second. Giles/Clark led by
a point from the Hewitsons overnight but must have reflected on what
could have been after loosing two first places on the final leg. Mention
should be made of Craig Johnson/Jess Barker and Erica Phillips/Lucy
Bennett who showed true grit and determination to finish all four races
regardless of number of capsizes and often fighting for last place. You
knew the fleet had a hard day, for once an RS social was quiet.
Sunday saw sunshine and a slightly reduced breeze; much to the relief of
many legs. Race 5 got underway in a patchy force 4. Former RS200 maestro
Lee Sydenham/Pippa Williams, returning to 200s after two seasons in
800s, was fast out the blocks and held a good lead early on with many
other leading contenders struggling. The Hewitsons and Vincent/Danbury
made steady progress from mid teen positions and took the leading places
on the third beat. Vincent looked to have the race under control but did
not cover the Hewitsons in the final 200 yards of the final run. The
Hewitsons found the better pressure and claimed first place by a boat
length. The wind eased for the final race down to 3-4. Charles Roome,
with father Harry making a guest appearance at the front just led at the
first mark from Paul and Adam Fox. The race was stood on its head on the
first run as the front 20 boats sat in light airs on the right whilst
anyone who gybed early was charging off full planning in two forces more
wind plus pointing 30 degrees lower. Sam Mettam/Geoff Phillips and Patch
Fillery/Joe Page were delighted to be 1.2 at the first leeward mark.
Mettam led almost the rest of the race as several of the leading
contenders pulled up into the leading group. The old clich that it is
not over until the fat lady sings had been proved right all weekend and
was again demonstrated in the final race as Mike Saul just got the better
of Mettam in the final 200 yards to claim first place with Jon Lewis
third and Vincent fourth.
The Hewitsons limped in 16th but overall victory was theirs. Vincent just
beat Lewis for second on tie break with Saul only a point behind in
fourth overall. Vincent/Danburys second overall gave them overall
victory on the GUL Grand Slam circuit just ahead of the Hewitsons.
154 200 sailors left Grafham very happy and tired. That Sunday night
feeling is unique thing to hiking boats. You drive two hours, stop and
try to get out the car to find your legs have stopped working and the
muscles have tightened right up and you nearly fall over. You know then
its been a great weekend and you cannot wait for the next time!!!
