Results / RS Fat Face Circuit Stokes Bay SC - 14/05/2005

RS200 Fat Face Eurocup at Stokes Bay � it was big weekend With a sixty boat RS200 fleet, a very tight finish in the 200 fleet and a huge RS Ball it was quite a weekend in RS land. The 200�s were at Stokes Bay with the 700�s and 800�s and the club coped really well with 126 boats providing free parking and camping. Launching may have been a little busy but it really didn�t matter. The 300�s, 400�s, 600�s and Vareo�s were just up the road at Lee on Solent allowing everyone to get together at Thorngate Hall on the Saturday for probably the best ever RS Ball. The weather forecast for the weekend had been very variable and the wind on Saturday certainly was very variable. A 12-18 knot breeze from the east coming over the clubhouse proved extremely patchy with a high variation in wind strength over the course. Everything depended on getting into a good zone of pressure early on the run. David Giles/Jane Willan led race 1 for a long period but they lost out early on the final run to Tom/Jo Hewitson. Then Geoff Carveth/Loopy Lucy Matthews and Steve Dunn/Noelle Vidal planed through in big pressure right at the death to claim second and third. Race 2 with an interesting starting sequence and Carveth/Loopy Matthews were in control winning from Lee Sydenham/Anne Vaudrey and James Stewart/Lucy Matthews. Race 3 featured a half mile start line and the entire fleet trying to start right beside the committee boat on a rather biased line. Carveth won the start and the race from the Hewitsons and Mick Wright/Howie. Ashore a strange thing happened, either virtually the entire body of RS sailors were abducted by aliens and replaced by alien clones or the BBC moved in a huge crew of fashion make over specialist in for their most difficult challenge so far. Because the RS Ball seemed to be populated by normally scruffy men who don�t worry about matching socks let alone style looking extremely smart and at least one hundred glamorous women. Now there is quite a lot of truth in the idea that quite a few grumpy, middle aged men sail 200�s and 800�s because the fleets are full of girls looking good in rubber; these same girls showed at the RS Ball they scrub up well!! Hard working RS200 rep Trudie Danbury was officially recognised as being POTY by being awarded the coverted RS personality of the year award at the Ball. Sunday played ball and produced lovely sunny weather and a steady southerly breeze parallel with the coast to give a non-taxing start to the day. Unfortunately the tide was under the fleet for the start and beat which saw a flurry of OCS�s and slow downwind legs against the tide. Hewitsons led race 4 early on but Sydenham/Vaudrey had too much pace downwind to win; Giles/Willan claimed third. Carveth/Loopy were well down in 14th. Loopy Lucy obviously needing to recover from meeting a fox whilst re decorating Stokes Bay bushs in the early morning. Carveth bounced back in race 5 to win from Marshall/Heather King and RS god Nick Peters with son James in third. The event appeared to have been thrown open when Carveth and the Hewitsons were black flagged in a series of general recalls. Sydenham/Vaudrey won the race from Giles/Willan and the Peters heavy weight/light weight combo. Calculators now appeared as everyone tried to work out who had won with no one to sure exactly where Geoff and Loopy had finished in race 4. As it transpired Carveth and Sydenham both had 19 points with Giles only one point behind; Carveth won the event as he had won one more race. Ruairidh Scott and Laura Newnham from Gunard won the Silver Division with a great 12th overall. Jo Wotton and Neil Harniman from the large Wembley contingent won the bronze division in 33rd overall. The British Fat Face Circuit resumes next with a visit to Scotland and Largs on the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend. Pete Vincent Grumpy middle aged RS200 helm enjoying the view.
