RS200 FAT FACE RACING CIRCUIT AT BRISTOL CORINTHIAN YACHT CLUB. Snakes and ladders was invited here. 40 RS200s went west for the first Fat Face Racing Circuit event of the year, good West Country hospitality and a giant game of snakes and ladders. Saturday saw a fresh northwest wind, which sneaked down the valleys and the corner of the Mendips to give some interesting shifts and plenty of decent gusts. This was only a warm up for Sunday, sunshine, relatively warm weather and a force 2 that could not make up its mind if it wanted to come from the north west or south west; usually changing twice in the starting sequence. PRO Rhys Lankester noticeably aged during the racing on Sunday as the windward mark spent more time in Arkies RIB being shifted then in position. The race team though did a good job in getting three true races in. It all seemed so easy for Lee Sydenham/Anne Vaudrey in race 1 as they led at mark 1 and pulled out a very comfortable lead. Jeremy Stephens with Roger Gilbert guesting in the crewing berth was equally comfortable in second with Tom/Jo Hewitson eventually claiming third ahead of Trudie Danbury/Graeme Ryder. Race 2 saw Arkie busy with the OCS board and was very eventful including local heroine Trudie finishing a lap early whilst in second place. After six people had a go at leading Sydenham/Vaudrey were in the lead at the finish with Stephens/Gilbert again second, Nick Charles/Juliet Kingsnorth in their first RS event third and Pete Vincent/Tessa Nicholls fourth. Race 3 saw new faces at he front with David Giles/Fiona Clark winning from Jon Lewis/Katy Nichol third and Marshall King/Lucy Matthews fourth. Sunday and it was spot the new wind. Sydenham/Vaudrey looked in fine form in race 4; just as they switched on autopilot to the finish a run turned into a reach and the leading ten boats nearly swallowed them up. They hung onto win from Parkstoness Richard/Pura Edwards, Sarah Allan/Jane Alexander at last stopping make silly mistakes in third and Andy/Jill Peters fourth. The Hewitsons found forward gear to win race 5 with Danbury/Ryder a fine second, Andy Robertson/Maggot King third and Giles/Clark fourth. Sydenham/Vaudrey were still in the driving seat with three firsts but a discard of 10th. Giles/Clark could claim overall victory only if they won the race with Sydenham worse than tenth. The Hewitsons were fast out of the blocks and at midway point they held a decent lead with a three way tie a distinct possibility with Giles often second and Sydenham stuck in the early teens. Then Giles went further right on the final beat and found the required shift to take the lead and win the race from the Hewitsons and the consistent Robertson/King. Sydenham/Vaudrey finished 11th so Giles claimed overall victory by a point. Jeremy Stephens won the silver division with Sam Littlejohn/Nathan Batchelor winning the bronze division in 21st overall. Lee Sydenham/Anne Vaudrey finished second six times in major RS200 events in 2004 but won when it mattered at the Nationals. Is history going to repeat itself? Carsington is the next stop for the Fat face circuit on April 9/10. Pete Vincent
