RS200 prize winners - Recipients of new jib S & C Hyslop courtsey of JP watersports

JP Watersports RS 200 Scottish Traveller Circuit Loch Venechar & Overall Series

The last round of the JP watersports RS200 Scottish circuit finished in fine style at loch Venchar this wkend. Saturday unexpectedly produced the best loch sailing conditions the author has ever sailed in. 10 –12 knots of breeze and regular oscillating shifts could be found with the occasional hole in between in very obvious areas to punish the ‘head in the boat’ sailors.

R1 was won by the pie eaters in 1254. Totalling 25 stone they managed to get the boat going in a gust and very slowly came to a halt at the finish. 1254 swiftly went ashore for tea and lots of cakes in a change to the normal 200 sailing scene, which is back to back racing. New comers to the fleet, 255 fireball sailors Ian Preist and Lucy Lingard showed some great upwind tenacity to take 2nd but were let down by the fact that downwind they thought they were sailing a skiff. Once they get the hang of going low they could be a pair to watch in the future. 1105 sailing with Mandy Hindletook 3rd.

R2 Chris Perry and Kirsty Lytton took race 2 with some great all round sailing. They proved that a new kite really makes the difference in terms of being able to soak low on the runs. Local pairing of Team Gorskowski sailed a fantastic beat and showed the fleet that wind bends do really happen at headlands and along shorelines. Again the downwind sailing and lack of practice possibly stopped them from winning. Again another team to watch for the future, although the crew looked to be a bit long in the tooth and doubtlessly would have been complaining of sore legs on the upwind leg. The author was certainly complaining of sore legs and clearly did not eat enough cakes, after a bad 1st beat 1254 tried in vain to charge through the fleet, but did not have the superior fat power to ghost through the lulls !

R3 and while some boats sneaked ashore for more tea and cakes, 1254 stayed out to do some extra homework and sneak in a few pies to celebrate the joys of tacking a 200 with a borrowed tiller extension that was just a little bit to long. The extra pies clearly worked as 1254 just could not slow down whilst almost certainly weighing in at a massive 32 stone by this point. They were given a very good run for their money throughout the race and just piped 1105 to the win with the father and son team of 531 in 3rd.

R4 1254 quickly nipped for a comfort break, and lost all the weight advantage they had. This proved to be a disaster as they no longer had the fat power to go round the wrong gate mark and rely on fat power to get them out of it. 1086 had clearly cottoned on to 1254 theory of fat power and stocked up for this race as they took the win from 1254 with 1105 narrowly missing out on 2nd.

Sundays racing was inevitably cancelled early due to a lack of wind, although there was a lot coming out of the author’s mouth as he tried to help new sailors to the fleet with tips on how to make the boat go faster – lots of pies. Any pie related company reading this article should call me if they wish their products to be endorsed. In return a small sponsorship package of helicopter (powerful 1) new 200 and all the incurred costs of getting to and from events would be a reasonable ask in return for full product endorsement.

Thanks must be paid to LVSC and all the helpers involved who put together a magnificent event. The author is sure that they must have put some high-powered fans regularly oscillating at the top of the loch to enable such good sailing on the Saturday.

Thanks must also be paid to the class sponsor – JP watersports who kindly provided a jib to the most attended boat at the series this year. This was won by father and daughter Scott and Corrie Hyslop.
