Posts: 0 | I can see now why Clare is persistent in promoting Parkstone this weekend - hardly anyone has entered and there are no 100s on the list, although that might be a bug in the listing page - there is an odd error/script measage appearing as I look now. I've just booked some more anti-inflamatories for my bad back, the forecast looks kinder to it than a F5 would be. So should I pack my boat up after sailing tonight?

James Nield Posts: 61 | I agree with you Al that cost is a large factor in 'do you or do you not' enter. As most of the 100 events are down south, the fuel costs are probably the most damaging element to people like me. I understand that if a club is providing entertainment such as a band for the evening function, and this is included in the entry fee (I am assuming this was the case at Parkstone) then it will be more expensive. But I would have thought 25 for a single-hander would be enough??
Unfortunately however, no one with the exception of Solos seem to be doing open meeting circuits. It can't just be price. But I don't know what the other reasons are.....is it simply that numbers of likeminded sailors such as ourselves no longer exist? The vast majority of clubs have seen a sharp decline in club numbers, so this will obviously be reflected in open meets.

Hi Al,
Just on the way home from the Southerns and luckily 'my driver' is still awake so I can write this!
I just thought I'd provide another perspective from someone who organises and runs sailing events for over 100 competitors.
We charge 37.50 for singlehanders to attend our Welsh Youths and Zones and 45 for double handers and we break even at best.
Once you factor in all the facility fee for the club, packed lunches for volunteers, fuel and everything else, the cost soon sky rockets. If you add onto that the cost of the odd repair for a propellor or similar you usually end up losing money.
Whilst I appreciate it would be great if we could get that type of championship for less, I doubt it's possible.
It's also not that expensive when you start comparing the cost of RS events to triathlons, cycle sportives or adventure races. They often charge over 50 for half a day and they can have up to 2000 people attend their events and not many more volunteers than are needed at sailing events.
I really enjoyed the event and I don't resent having to pay the 38. In fact I think it's pretty good value.

Alistair Dickson Posts: 6 | Hi Al,
No I didn't win unfortunately. I was given another lesson in consistency by Mr Freeman who again managed to win before the last race and get to the showers long before we did!
I get your point re the late entry but I must admit I thought it was made quite clear on the entry form that you would be penalised if you didn't pay before Wednesday or whenever it was.
Yes there's definitely a need to be flexible but encouraging people to enter and pay early does make things much easier for the organisers.
Cheers
Al

Posts: 0 | The 38 included the entertainment of watching the Chairman trying to navigate through the marina without gybing on Sunday morning. Fortunately a friendly 800 forced him into 2 quick gybes and one quick swim. Or maybe he was just stopping for breakfast on his centreboard.
I agree with Mr Hall that the late entry could be hampering attendence from those who need or want to decide late. Maybe worth a chat at the AGM (if such a thing exists). If we could target one event in 2016 that could be a bit cheaper and fairly central then we'd get an idea of how much of an impact cost is having on attendence. I reckon last weekend cost me in the region of 400 so as James says the entry is only a relatively small aspect of the cost for those of us travelling a fair distance.
I wouldn't ask any club or association to make a loss on an event so thanks for clearing that up Al.
Anyway, good to see everyone at the weekend and to meet a few more people. I really enjoyed the venue and the races where I had a functioning spinnaker. When I get to an event with a working kite and a rudder I reckon I'll be unstoppable ;).
