So who is thinking about going boys and girls?

Sue and I were already planning to go to Aus for a month this time next year. 'Great' I thought, I can have a couple of days sailing thrown in. This idea has not gone down that well frankly.

£700 for a container and however many weeks with the boat in transit are a worry too, as are the reports of the 14 worlds where the weather seems to have been more like here in October.

So what are the upsides someone please.

And how can we fix a boat charter instead?

I have the event pencilled in my diary....however I approached RS about a charter boat before Christmas. The reply was that details would follow in due course.....

I have emailed David Temby in Melbourne today who was at the Garda event last year to see if there is a boat I could charter - await a reply

It would be great if there were several charter boats available (the Aussies each had a brand new charter boat at Garda)

At present flight prices look very reasonable at around £750 return......

The flight is fine, but the container cost is a hard sell!

So fingers crossed.

I'm happy to take my own kite f'rinstance and my own bimbles kit

I would go if we could get a good crowd of regulars together.  Yes, container is expensive but I think I could justify it if there were no charter boats available.  Maybe RS would do a deal - buy them from us in Aus for a pre-agreed price after the Worlds and sell us a new one back home for a good price, thus saving half the shipping costs (?) and boosting sales of second-hand 100s in Aus?  I'm not looking for a new boat but such a deal might be tempting to others?  Giles

I am actually planning on going to New Zealand in January 2016 and was hoping to stop off in Melbourne for the Worlds on the way home. Emma was even warming to the idea as it happens at the same time as the Australian Open tennis. However I had hoped to charter a boat since I am not keen on losing my boat for around 6 months and I am also not wildly keen on the 1,000 shipping cost. I remain interested but the logistics are challenging.

Maybe Emma hadn't warmed to the idea quite as much as I thought. That last post was actually from her, having logged in as me! I will have to warm her up a bit more. It is winter after all:-)

Hi All

I have just entered this event, there has been a problem with the web site blocking entries, which was fixed a few days ago

I have been chatting to Heather about this event, and how it is a bit a chicken and egg situation. Nobody wants to commit to the deposit (especially the non refundable container one), until they see how many others are entering.

So a different approach is required.

I think, this is new ground for any RS fleet, to run a major event outside Europe, so it is really difficult to judge the number of sailors this could attract, hence the need to get people to commit early, so Heather has some idea of the number of containers to order, and the viability of running the event, to fullfil the ISAF requirements so it can be sanctioned it as a "worlds".

A decision will be made at Carnac, at the latest, if the event will run or not. I release that this means delaying booking air tickets, but it is better to make sure the event is definitely happening first. If at Carnac the event is pulled then all deposits will be refunded.

Heather is working hard on reducing the container costs and now thinks the cost of getting a boat out there will be at the lower end of the estimated amount, £700 - £800 each

So if you are interested then enter now and pay you deposits later, as this will help to judge the support for what should be a great event in a wonderful place.

See you all in Melbourne next January what ever as my trolley dolly and I are going anyway.

I'll probably sign up in the coming days. Just need to sort out how I get my boat from Stockholm, Sweden to Melbourne. So, if I can get there, you guys from UK have to!

PS. Maybe need to warm up my wife to the idea a bit too...

I see the cost of a place in the container is now £500.

I have looked at DFS Worldwide, who offer a 20x8x8.5 ft container all in for £650 each way, but that includes collection of the contents from any London postcode.

I am waiting to find out how much it costs if we deliver to Southampton, which RS will expect anyway.

I have 2 boats going, a 100 and a 200, but even if we can only get one more in, the cost comes down to £433 per boat less the delivery charge.

I expect RS plan to pack more in, and do a deal with the Melbourne club to get them to and from the venue. 4x 100s plus trolleys on a pre-fabricated frame (which we could make for nothing) would bring the cost down to £325 less delivery costs, which seems abit more encouraging in terms of getting entries.

All this is of course from someone with no knowledge, no experience, and no expertise!

Others are welcome to tell me why the above is all drivel.....

I have got it down to £550 so far. If anyone knows if we can get 3 or 4 boats in one, it would be good to know!

Can anyone answer how many boats we can pack in a container?
