Do  settings for the spreader bars - i.e. fore and aft or in and out - make any difference to the the way the collar works? I find that mine bends regularly, and I have just bought a new one, which I would like to keep the right shape for once!

The collar bending suggests the two screws that hold it in place were either too loose or too tight as the spreader settings should not affect the sleeve rotation. Oil / Lube the collar regularly to ensure smooth / easy rotation but also check the screws have not come too loose.

As the leeward shroud is loose upwind and the windward shroud not much tighter it suggests that spreaders settings are fairly irrelevant although I have noticed several sailors moving the spreaders out especially if they are heavy sailors in an 8.4 rig.

I had to bend the spreader bracket on Jane's 100 back into shape a couple of times but ended up with fractures in the moulding.  At £50 a pop I am keen to avoid repeating the exercise too many times.  I think screw tension and McLube are the two things to take care of.  I noticed that one of the screws leaves a gap for the bracket to move when it's tight but the other one doesn't so I have to leave it a bit loose.
