Gurnard RS 100 open report
Three visitors joined eight local RS 100s in the glorious sunshine for the Bolle RS 100 Grand Prix event at Gurnard on July 6 and 7. In spite of the light winds forecast, all sailors elected to use 8.4 rigs.
6 short races were held on Saturday. Racing started in a 6 knot north easterly breeze with Giles Peckham leading at the first mark and extending to win from Mike Adams. Race two again went to Giles, with Mark Harrison just holding on to second in front of Al Hall and Mike. Al, sailing his brand new boat, shot off to win the third race from Mark, Giles and Mike. The embryonic sea breeze played havoc with race 4 and it was abandoned after 1 lap. When racing re started about 30 minutes later, it was in a force 2 -3 south westerly. Al mastered these conditions to post 3 more wins before sailing off back to Weston, leaving Giles, Mark, Mike, Ric Newnham and Judith French finishing the day in that order behind him,
Sunday arrived but the wind didn’t. Racing was postponed in anticipation of a SW sea breeze, which failed to arrive. However by 12.30 a light NE breeze filled in and 2 races were sailed. In race 7 Mark and Giles quickly extended away from the fleet in the fluky conditions, with the lead changing place at least once every leg and Mark taking the gun. In the final race of the day, Jervis Tilley pipped Mark on the line to take his first RS 100 race win, with Judith in third. There was a close battle at the back of the fleet with Kingsley Brown just managing to beat Steve Kimpton on the reach to the finish.
Al’s early departure meant that the overall win went to Mark, with Giles in second and Mike Adams in third.
