The RS100 Class Association Committee proposes a vote on adopting an addition to the RS100 Class Rules to permit setting up the shrouds without ferrules.
The current RS100 rules can be viewed here.
Background to the Proposed Change
The ferrules on the shrouds were intended to stop the spreader from riding up the shroud, losing its functionality. Because standard shrouds come with 8 ferrules, above and below the spreader-end point for both 8.4 and 10.2 rig heights, they more than double the cost of a set of shrouds. Further, experience has shown that shrouds often break, always where the wire enters the ferrule.
Clive Eplett and David Smart have trialled sailing without the ferrule as agreed in 2023 and reported no issues, including using the shrouds for three very windy and wavy days at Mounts Bay. Shrouds are not showing wear or damage at the spreader point, and spreaders have not shown any inclination to ride up the shroud. The caveat to this is that they have always put several turns of plastic tape on the shroud, just above the spreader-end. This would continue to be a recommendation, but not a rule.
The fleet unanimously voted at the 2023 AGM that, subject to this trial being successful ferrules should no longer be required to be used. In light of the above, the committee has concluded that the trial has been a success and therefore the rules should be amended accordingly.
Details of Proposed Change
The current rule governing rig modification is:
